The Process

How Calderdale Current Works

A straightforward way to reduce energy use and carbon emissions while cutting costs.

01

Join the Programme

Your organisation connects with Calderdale Current. We act as your agent and get our trusted energy broker to secure the best prices from the market for your electricity (with 100% renewable sources offered as standard), gas, and water.

02

Switch & Contribute

Once you switch, 0.5p for every kWh of electricity you use (inclusive of VAT) is paid into the Calderdale Current grant fund. Contributions flow with your billing cycles.

03

Become Eligible

After six months from your supply start date, and once the Community Foundation for Calderdale confirms the grant fund has reached £10,000, your organisation becomes eligible to apply for a grant to support projects that reduce energy use and carbon emissions. Please note: the six-month period begins when your energy supply starts, not when the contract is signed.

04

Apply for Funding

Apply directly to the Community Foundation for Calderdale (CFFC), who manage the entire grant application process independently. Projects must deliver measurable reductions in energy consumption or carbon emissions. You choose your own contractor for the works.

Independent

Grant fund managed by Community Foundation for Calderdale for environmental and public benefit

Built on Trust

Independence & Governance

Calderdale Current is delivered by CFFC as an environmental and public-benefit programme. The grant fund is managed independently, giving you confidence that every decision is made in the community's best interest. Grants cannot be used for general business support, commercial expansion, or activities unrelated to energy or carbon reduction.

Independent Fund Management

The Community Energy Fund is managed entirely by the Community Foundation for Calderdale — a trusted, independent charity with deep roots in the borough.

No Hawley Energy Involvement in Decisions

Hawley Energy and its staff have no input into grant applications or decisions. Our only role is to confirm eligibility and answer occasional technical questions.

Choose Your Own Contractor

When applying for a grant, you are free to choose any contractor for the works. There is no requirement to use Hawley Energy — the choice is entirely yours.

Full Transparency

Members receive periodic updates on fund performance, grant outcomes, and community impact. Every contribution is tracked and accounted for.

How the Governance Works

For every kWh of electricity you use, 0.5p (inclusive of VAT) is paid into the Community Energy Fund. This fund is held and managed by the Community Foundation for Calderdale — an established, independent charity.

Calderdale Current provides grants to support projects that reduce energy use and carbon emissions in Calderdale. The aim is to deliver environmental and community benefit. Any benefit to the applicant's business is incidental to this purpose.

When you apply for a grant, the Community Foundation receives your application, assesses it on its merits, and makes the decision. Hawley Energy's only involvement is to confirm your eligibility (that you have been on supply for at least 6 months) and, on occasion, to answer technical questions.

No member of the Hawley Energy team has any say in grant outcomes.

Lead the Change

Anchor Sites

Anchor Sites are key supporters who accelerate the grant fund — helping businesses across Calderdale access larger grants and make meaningful energy improvements.

There are two ways to become an Anchor Site, and you don't need to be based in Calderdale to join.

Large Energy User

Sign up for gas and electricity supply through a supplier arranged by Baseline Power. Your high energy consumption means your usage-based contribution (0.5p per kWh) significantly grows the grant fund.

If you choose the opt-in (Calderdale Current) rate and complete 6 months, you become eligible for grants.

Direct Financial Contributor

Make a direct financial contribution to the Community Energy Fund managed by the Community Foundation for Calderdale — without signing up for energy supply. This can be a one-off or recurring payment.

Grant eligibility requires later signing up for gas + electricity via Baseline Power and completing 6 months.

Accelerate Environmental Impact

Your contribution directly increases the fund, enabling larger grants for projects that deliver measurable reductions in energy use and carbon emissions across Calderdale

Visible Community Leadership

Be recognised as a driving force behind Calderdale’s transition to cleaner, smarter energy

Demonstrate Environmental Commitment

Show measurable environmental and community impact that benefits the wider community

About the Programme

A Shared Mission for a Greener Calderdale

Calderdale Current brings employers, anchor institutions, and local partners into a collective effort: to reduce carbon emissions, cut energy waste, and improve environmental performance across the borough.

It starts with clarity. We help organisations understand their energy use, their opportunities and the actions that deliver the biggest environmental impact. Enerlyse provides the intelligence to see exactly where improvements matter most.

Then comes action. Calderdale Current connects organisations with trusted delivery partners and proven technologies that reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

When specialist expertise is required, the wider Hawley Energy ecosystem provides technical support, analytical insight, procurement guidance through Baseline Power, engineering capability, and energy project finance to remove capital barriers.
